Learning to dance is fun and it is easy. In a sense it is like learning a new language, a language in which moods and emotions are expressed in movement; a language of rhythm, grace and harmony. It is new, but in a very real sense it is the oldest language in the world, for dancing is the oldest form of art.

Dancing is a wholesome, natural outlet for the emotions. It develops grace and poise, timing and balance. Men take pride in their ability to lead their partners with assurance and poise. Ladies enjoy the ability to follow their partners smoothly, expertly and correctly. The ability to dance develops personality, and above all—it is fun.

Taking dance lessons is a great way to improve your confidence, it is a way to get fit and did I mention they’re fun?

And It’s Easier Than You Think…

1. Do you want to, learn to dance professionally, learn to dance for pleasure? It is important to know what you want to achieve before you start.

Perhaps you want to learn to get fit, for a social occasion or to meet new friends. Plus if you know what you want to get out of it this helps your instructor.

Lots of people start with social dancing. Social dancing classes are great places to learn ballroom dancing. A small percentage of social dancers later find that their love of dance compels them to become competitive dancers. Social dances normally start with a one-hour dance lesson and it is normally possible to find weekly group dance lessons especially for beginners.

2. If you want to find out what is involved in dancing before you commit to lessons, or there are no good teachers locally, consider a dance video. You can watch it at your leisure, plus watch it as many times as you like to aid learning. A good video will help you practice once you start lessons.

3. Dancing provides great social benefits but also participating in ballroom dancing on a regular basis will produce significant mental and physical health benefits. Dancing is a great stress reliever. It builds confidence, alertness and good attitude. It also has been proven to have a great physical benefit as it physically tones the whole body in enjoyable exercise.

Dancing can be a fun way to lose weight and get into shape. Just check out the potential for burning calories – Burn 309 calories with just one hour of Ballet, Tap or Freestyle, 290 calories with Country Line Dancing or Swing and 193 calories with the Waltz.

When choosing a dance studio you want to choose one that is conveniently located to your home or work place. If you can get there easier you will keep going and repetition is the key to quick learning. Not sure if you want to learn? Some nightclubs or studios hold introductory lessons. A number of websites have a dance studio locator, so that you can find studios local to you.

In addition these sites have lots of free instructional material. Check out a few different dance studios. Most dance studios will offer group and private lessons. Look for studios offering a mixture of the two. How many teachers do they have? Do they have an introductory offer?

You may also find ballroom dance classes at local colleges and many city or county recreational departments include ballroom dance classes. Some organizations such as the YWCA, Community Centers, Elks or Moose Lodges offer dance lessons to their members and guests.

4. Find out about the different dance styles before you start lessons and see which ones you want to learn. Plus you’ll be more knowledgeable about the style and rhythm of the different dances before you start classes.

Don’t forget to get my free book that covers the basics of ballroom dancing, details at the end of these tips.

5. Do you need a partner to start ballroom dancing? No. Lots of classes accept singles. If you already have a partner then you can have fun learning together.

6. Should you have private lessons or group classes? This depends on your preference and your budget. As a beginner you may prefer the privacy of individual tuition and certainly you will learn quicker, they can also be useful if you have missed some group classes and do not want to get left behind or you feel that you need extra tuition. However when starting out consider the social aspect of group learning which most people find stimulating, challenging and lots of fun. Group classes are also less expensive.

7. There are no special clothes for social dancing, except that they need to be comfortable and give you freedom to move. However for learning professional ballroom dancing you may find that exercise clothing is more appropriate, ask your instructor if you are unsure. When choosing shoes think about not only appearance but also comfort, support and protection.

8. Selecting your instructor is an important decision and you want to ensure that your instructor has professional qualifications. Obtain a copy of their resume for professional examinations and their experience in teaching beginners. The United States Amateur Ballroom Dancers Association will be able to advise you further.

9. Finally, just in case you didn’t get the message before – have fun! Learning a new skill can and should be fun, that way you’ll stick at it and before you know where you are you have mastered it!

Turns and spins are fun to do; however, they require some specific skills. You must first become aware of the different types of turns and the most common problems you might encounter. Then you are ready to start your adventure in turns.

TYPES OF TURNS

Very simply, there are only two directions in which you can rotate on a standing foot; towards the outside of the foot or towards the inside of the foot. For example, if you are standing on the left foot and rotate left, you would be turning towards the outside of the supporting foot; if you rotate right, you would be turning towards the inside of the supporting foot.

From these two directions, you can execute five types of turns or rotations:

Inside Swivels

Outside Swivels

Spiral Turns

Pivot turns

Spin Turns

By learning these 5 types of rotating actions you will be on your way to mastering any type of turn or rotation in any pattern.

SKILLS REQUIRED FOR TURNS

There are four main factors that can influence your ability to turn:

Your ability to maintain your balance on the supporting leg-column

Your ability to swivel the supporting foot enough to complete the turn

Your ability to create power for the turn

Your ability to absorb the power in the turn

You were introduced to the first factor in our previous issue: ”Ballroom Dance Lesson – Improve Your Balance For Better Dancing” .

In this issue we will be concentrating on the second factor – the ability to swivel on the supporting foot.

TURN EXERCISE 1 – INSIDE SWIVELS

(Print this page so you can try this exercise as you read it).

This exercise will allow you to practice swiveling on the supporting foot, as well as developing a habit of bringing the free leg to the supporting leg before you turn.

Stand with your right side next to a table or kitchen counter. Put your right hand on the counter. Stand with your feet together and your weight towards the ball of your right foot.

Take a long step forward with your left foot – by pushing from your supporting or right foot. As your left foot becomes the supporting foot relax the knee and bring your right knee to the left knee. On the ball of your left foot, swivel 1/2 turn to your right (towards the inside of the left foot). Put your left hand on the counter.

Now you are standing with the counter on your left side. Feet together and the weight towards the ball of the left foot.

Take a long step forward with your right foot – by pushing from your supporting or left foot. As your right foot becomes the supporting foot relax the knee and bring your left knee to your right knee. On the ball of your right foot, swivel 1/2 turn to your left (towards the inside of the right foot). Put your right hand on the counter.

Now you are (as you were on the beginning of this exercise) standing with the counter on your right side. Feet together and the weight towards the ball of your right foot.

Repeat the same swivel exercise several times. As you become more proficient with this action try performing the same swivel action with your supporting leg straight as you arrive onto it and swivel, and relaxing it as you are ready to move on to the next leg at the end of the swivel.

This swivel action is used as a step in dances like Swing, Rumba or Cha-Cha. It is also the turning action used in walk around turns and walk around underarm turns. (Any half turn that turns towards the inside of the foot and moves back to the same direction it came from is actually an inside swivel).

Many dancers are surprised to discover this inside swivel action in many of the patterns they currently dance. Inside Swivels are also the foundation of the third type of turn in our list – Spiral turns.

Happy Dancing

Next Issue – Outside Swivels A popular type of swivels used in all dances – especially Argentine Tango. Also the fundation for the fourth type of turn in our list – Pivot turns.

Are you ready to bring out those dancing shoes? Not so fast. Before hitting the dance floor it is important to learn basic ballroom dancing moves and familiarize yourself with commonly used dance terms.

Rock Step is a slow sequence of two steps where the weight is transferred from one foot to another and then back. Rock back and rock forward are two basic versions.

Ball Change is also a sequence of two steps involving a partial weight transfer from the ball of one foot to another.

Kick Ball Change is a popular swing dance step that consists of a kick followed by the ball change. The timing is usually a split beat count of 1&2 or 1a2. Kick ball change has three distinct moves: a kick with the left foot, a slight push off the floor by the ball of the left foot behind the right foot, and a step with the right foot.

Triple step is also popular in swing dances. Three steps are performed on two beats of music, with the first step taken on count 1, the second step on the half beat between counts 1&2, and the final step on count 2. Also called a shuffle step, triple step is done in quick-quick-slow sequences, often counted as one-and-two or three-and-four.

Often a follower’s step in West Coast Swing, Coaster Step is a back-together-forward or forward-together-back triple step danced to the timing of quick-quick-slow.

Anchor Step is the concluding triple step pattern of nearly all main West Coast Swing dance moves. An anchor step ends with partners settling their weights on the back foot, hands held L-to-R, awaiting the leader’s next move.

Lock Step involves locking the moving foot as it approaches the standing foot. In this triple step pattern, the lower part of the moving leg crosses in front of or behind the lower part of the standing leg in the direction of the approach. Lock step is often used in quickstep and cha-cha moves.

One of the more popular basic ballroom dancing moves, grapevine includes side steps and steps across the support foot. It is a continuous traveling step pattern to the side with alternating crosses behind and in front of the supporting foot.

New York City is home to some of the best dance studios in the US. Many national and international dance companies also make regular stops here while on tour, treating New Yorkers to a wide variety of dance performances all year round. New York City ballroom dancing comes in an assortment of styles. The basic forms, such as cha cha, rhumba, tango, swing, foxtrot, hustle, mambo, waltz, samba, paso doble and quickstep, are highly popular.

Some studios teach specialized techniques such as Palladium Era mambo, Cuban rhythmic dance, tap, flamenco, Alexander, Afro-Caribbean dance, jitterbug, lindy hop, American jazz, West Coast swing, Argentine tango, Texas 2-step, smooth swing lindy, big band, and merengue.

Classes are segmented according to skill. First-timers usually enroll in an introductory course for a minimal fee. If they decide to take up dancing more seriously, they move on to the beginner’s class which is usually a six-week course that covers fundamental lead and follow steps, body techniques, and open and closed patterns of New York City ballroom dancing.

Ballroom dancing classes are a combination of workshop and practice. A teacher may allot an hour to dance instruction and another hour to practice sessions. Every week new steps and combination’s of figures are taught with emphasis on good technique and styling.

Intermediate or advanced classes are typically faster and involve more complex figures and concepts. Here you will learn proper execution of combination’s and sequences, as well as ballroom music interpretation.

Competitive ballroom dancing classes are taught by professional dancers with extensive dancesport experience. Routines focus on International-style syllabus figures that demand high levels of strength, stamina and flexibility.

New York City ballroom dancing studios offer group classes as well as private lessons. One-on-one sessions enable students to progress at their own pace and concentrate on specific dances they wish to learn. Persistent mistakes and bad habits can also be corrected immediately if you have a private instructor.

Ballroom dancing is a great hobby, pastime and for some competitive activity. Getting started however can at times seem daunting so what’s the best way forward? Well it depends on several things such as what you want to achieve and the facilities available in your area. This article looks at the various options available and their respective merits.

Instruction DVD’s

The DVD has come of age and interactive tuition using DVD’s is available on almost any subject. Ballroom dancing is no exception. The benefit of using DVD’s is the learning can be self paced and if you are shy or self conscious you can learn to dance in the privacy of your own home or local village hall far from prying eyes.

However, DVD’s are not ideal for absolute beginners but rather they lend themselves to the improver looking for advanced techniques and learning to compliment their regular lessons. Ballroom dancing is not at all straightforward and like many activities the basics are best learned with a teacher. That’s not to say that some people don’t manage more than adequately using only DVD’s but as a rule you can’t beat the hands on approach of an experienced teacher. DVD’s cost from as little as £15.00 up to several hundred for more advanced material.

Classes

Classes are a great way to get into ballroom dancing and have the benefit of introducing you to like minded people and other dance related activities such as social dances, medal tests and even competitions. The format of most classes is for learning to take place as a group activity with the pace of the lesson moving at the right pace for the majority attending. The only word of warning would be not to drop into an established class, but rather to find a class of beginners at the same level or, if you are a more advanced dancer, to arrange a private session with the teacher prior to joining the class to establish the class’s suitability. There’s nothing worse than joining a class who have been working as a group on dance steps with which you are not familiar – you may find this discouraging. Classes cost around £5.00 per person, or £10.00 per couple, per lesson.

One word of warning with classes. make sure you can set aside enough time each week to attend. Miss one or two lessons and you will find the group has moved on leaving you behind playing catch up, which can be frustrating.

Private lessons

Without doubt the best way to learn how to dance is through private lessons. You get the teacher’s undivided attention and the pace will be tailored to your ability and speed of learning. If you are serious about learning to dance and want to be waltzing round the floor in the shortest possible time then this is the way to do it. Private lessons cost from around £20 per session, usually 45 minutes, up to around £100 for a session with a former world class professional.

Dance breaks

Dance breaks are a great way to learn to dance. There are breaks tailored to suit all levels of dancer from absolute beginners through to competitive dancers looking to perfect their techniques.

Ballroom dancing has often had a reputation as being a dancing outlet for the upper class. It’s a lot of fun, but before you can start any program of ballroom dancing, TV shows and movies have proven that theory wrong and have actually shown how easy it is to look good knowing some basic ballroom dance steps.

People may not have realized it, but when swing was popular a few years ago, they were actually doing a formal ballroom dancing. It brought ballroom dancing to the public’s attention as a younger generation was having an absolute blast dancing the night away to rockabilly style music. The triple step is the key step in most swing dancing forms. This is a fast three-step move with the count off of quick-quick-slow or 1&2.

East Coast swing was probably the most popular form of swing. This step uses the triple step in the rock step together. The rock step is a two step sequence with a slow-slow count. It would be counted literally as 1&2, 3&4, 5, 6. If you have not yet figured out, when you see a step listed as 1&2, it is a quick step.

The triple step is also featured in the Carolina shag. It is similar to the East Coast shag, but replaces the rock step with the kick ball change. You will seeing that it is very common to interchange the different basic steps, thus creating a new step.

There are many different types of ballroom dance steps involved in ballroom dancing. Other ones include the anchor step, sailor step, coaster step, lock step and the grapevine step. You will find them all in various combinations in the many different forms of ballroom dancing. A little coordination and good timing will go a long way in successfully learning them.

It may seem a little intimidating at first, but once you learn the basics, ballroom dancing can actually be quite easy. Keep in mind that you are not attempting to become a professional dancer. In actuality, it is merely that everyone is the timing of the steps and can quickly blend in without any disruption to anyone else’s dancing.

Ballroom dancing is not something that you really want to jump right in and do, but after a few lessons you’ll be surprised at how quickly you can pick it up and be well on your way to mastering basic ballroom dance steps. There is no reason for anyone not to be able to enjoy the beauty and elegance of ballroom dancing.

Ball room shoes are, as the name indicates, the special shoes designed and made to wear while engaging in ball room dance. Generally there are two categories of ball room dance, as recognized by International Dance Sport Federation (IDSF): ballroom dance and Latin American dance. There are two kinds of ball room shoes, one each for each category. The main design specification of ball room shoes is the suede soles. Also in general, ball room shoes are of low heel variety, especially for shoes intended for women. For men, ball room shoes have one-inch heels. For ladies, ball room shoes have two-inch heels. The main attraction of the ball room shoes is the attractive multi-color fabric of the shoes. The colors are designed to provide a match for the multi-color dress of the ball room dancer. Low heel shoes are used for ball room dancing because the weight of the dancer is distributed across the foot. It should be kept in mind that for Latin American dance the shoes have higher heels. It is intended to distribute the weight of the dancer to the toes. Low heel shoes allow freedom of movement while dancing, which in turn provides physical convenience and mental comfort. So it is possible to dance for more time wearing low heel shoes than with conventional shoes. There is no danger of the dancer’s feet swelling or ankle twisting with low-heel ball room dance shoes.

In spite of the obvious advantages of low heel shoes, it is always better to try the shoes before buying. In cities, there are plenty of shops that offer a wide variety of ball room shoes with excellent quality. But there is good news for rural people. There are several good online shops in Internet that offer good quality shoes in bargain prices. There are several types of ball room shoes available in the market. Tan leather shoe is the basic kind of single-strap shoe. Black Nubuck shoe is a special kind that looks extremely good while dancing and it is said to provide an appearance of sophistication while dancing. Gold sparklenet shoe is a glittering variety that is going to shine in the dance floor. Light brown shoes are another highly popular variety of ball room shoes. An attractive collection of low-heel ball room shoes is known as Stephanie Latin Shoes. Another attractive, though expensive, collection is the Celebrity Spectator shoes. Also available are some vintage ball room dance shoes. Among the vintage shoes, the most popular series is Remix Vintage Shoes. In this series, 1940s Wedgies and Classic Saddle Shoes are two of the excellent varieties. These shoes are cute and unique and provide a highly comfortable feeling while dancing.

Dancers normally amaze viewers not only with their graceful moves but also with their dance wear, which is both attractive and comfy.

Dance wear ranges from leotards, skirts, tights, dance tops and bottoms, undergarments, unitards, and warm-ups. On the other hand, dance outfits can come in various designs and styles suited for individual preferences.

There’s the classic frocked body presented with flattering flowers. Made from a mix of cotton and lycra, it is comfortable and stylish at the same time. Perfect for ballroom practice are skirts with colorful colors and flower designs.

The favorite blouson top with animal prints is chosen by many dancers since it is versatile enough to be worn with almost anything. The top contains small satin ribbons at the waists and wrists and can be worn either with a bra or teddy.

The lace body is a great addition to popular dance wear and can be worn with matching lace skirt for ease in movement and right fit. The lace ballroom skirt is also one of this season’s great finds. The new ribbon slash sleeve body boasts of sleeves with luxurious ribbons made of satin for a stunning effect. Italian crepe hugs the body with lycra pants.

The sexy lace-up top is fashionable and comfortable at the same time. It can be laced closed for a modest look or bared open for more daring women. For variety, you might want to partner it with either a lace up skirt or trousers.

The panel is a classic yet beautiful piece of dance wear. It is a Latin skirt that flatters women in all shapes and sizes. The skirt’s flare creates movement and provides coverage at the same time.

The fashionable bohemian skirt gives a good mixture of fashionable style and a light and airy feeling for ease in movement. Made from Italian crepe and layers of stretch net, the uneven hem is suited for any height. Pair it with a bohemian top that has great details with frills at the wrists and neckline that extends into a scarf. The stylish tunic is both flattering and easy to wear, either with skirts or trousers.

You may take your pick from among these various kinds of dance wear to suit your mood and body shape for that flattering yet comfy look as you dance to your favorite tunes.
